Launch of the National Guide for Sustainable Management of Wetlands
One of our Principal Consultants, Bena Smith, is in Madagascar attending the official launch of the National Guide for Sustainable Management of Wetlands.
The 2-day event, attended by The Minister of the Environment, Ecology and Forests, UK Ambassador and the Ramsar Regional Officer for Africa, was held on World Wetlands Day in the capital, Antananarivo. On day one, Bena presented best practices in the management and operation of wetlands, including a case study on London Wetlands Centre to tie in with the World Wetlands Day theme (“Wetlands for a Sustainable Urban Future”) and on the second day, delivered a training session to Malagasy Ramsar site managers on wetland habitat restoration and management.
The downloadable National guideline (in French) has been developed by WWT together with a number of Madagascar conservation organisations. The guideline is very timely in regard to last year’s designation of new Ramsar sites in Madagascar and in light of significant wetland losses due to urbanisation and conversion to rice paddies.
