Say thank you to your toilet this World Toilet Day, 19 November 2013
19th November has been designated by the United Nations General Assembly as World Toilet Day , urging changes in policy and behaviour to promote good practice on water management (sanitation in particular) around the world. As their mission statement states, they “aim to break the taboo around toilets and draw attention to the global sanitation challenge”.
Hard to believe nowadays, but it is estimated that 2.5 billion people (!) don’t have access to sanitation and, according to WaterAid, one in three of the world’s population don’t have a toilet.
Here are some other facts about sanitation you may be interested to know:
– Sanitation is a human right
– Almost 2,000 children die every day from diarrhoea caused by unsafe water
– Safe toilet facilities keep girls in school
– More people in the world have a mobile phone than a toilet
Can you imagine life without a toilet?
