Today we celebrate World Toilet Day, which aims to highlight the importance of adequate sanitation as a global development priority. The Sustainable Development Goals, launched in 2015, include a target (goal 6) to ensure everyone everywhere has access to toilets by 2030.
Delivering on this basic human right (the right to water and sanitation) in a world where 1 in 3 people lack access to a toilet, poses significant social, financial and environmental challenges, and stresses the urgent need to work with (and for) nature in order to safeguard public health across the world.
