Recycle week: Recycling at home and away, time to celebrate R-R-R
Recycle week has started (June 16-22) with the theme “Recycling at home and away”, encouraging once again to Reduce, Re-use and, of course, Recycle. As we know, plastic pollution in particular has become a man-made catastrophe over the last few decades. Its production uses an incredible amount of fossil fuels and threatens human health, habitats and wildlife. The Initiative Plastic Oceans have recently come up with facts on the subject; did you know that…
Plastic pollution alone could be costing the developing and industrialised nations around £1 billion a year as it threatens fishing and tourism?
Over the last ten years we have produced more plastic than during the whole of the last century? It takes 1/4 of a litre of oil to produce a 1 litre plastic bottle?
To end on a positive note, according to WWF, “current UK recycling is estimated to save more than 18 million tonnes of CO2 a year” – the equivalent to taking 5 million cars off the road! More information can be found visiting the recyclenow website. Let’s keep up the good work, happy recycling!
