Workshop on the design and management of Songdo Wetland Centre
Last week Bena Smith, one of our Principal Consultants, participated in a workshop on the Design and Future Management of the proposed Songdo Wetland Centre, South Korea.
Hosted by the Incheon Free Economic Zone and Incheon Metropolitan City, and sponsored by the East Asian-Australasian Flyway Partnership, the 3-day workshop was held close to the Songdo Tidal Flat Ramsar Site which is important for Black-faced Spoonbill and Saunder’s Gull, species of global conservation concern that breed close to the site.
Presentations from Sungei Buloh Wetland Nature Reserve (Singapore), the Hong Kong Wetland Park, local wetland centres in and around Songdo, researchers from local academic institutions and Bena on best practices in the design and operation of wetland centres, provided the core information needed for discussion. Key issues were how to integrate the proposed wetland centre into an industrial zone, securing an area of wetland for education use close to the centre, and how to link the centre with nearby education facilities and proposed residential areas.
WWT Consulting will report on the workshop and make specific recommendations on the proposed wetland centre to the Incheon Metropolitan City.
