Rural Sustainable Drainage Systems Tour
Last week, Water Resource Engineer David Lesser of Stroud District Council gave WWT Consulting staff a bespoke tour of the 2017 award winning Stroud Rural SuDS project.
Departing from the beautifully situated Ebworth Centre, we followed the waters path through the valley to search for various interventions to slow the flow. Natural materials such as logs and brash were placed in channels to obstruct and hold the flow. Discrete earth bunds were built to provide opportunities for water to pool and infiltrate, reducing the unchecked flooding of fields. Open silt traps were created in key areas to hold water and allow silt to settle out. We managed to spot just a handful of the over 280 measures to reduce downstream flood risk.
What an inspiring pilot project revealing the true potential of green infrastructure at the catchment scale!
