WWT Consulting in Ras Al-Khor, Dubai
Matthew, Rebecca and Marie have just visited Ras Al-Khor Wildlife Sanctuary in Dubai to continue discussions with Dubai Municipality regarding the site’s protection, restoration and development as a wildlife watching destination, with facilities for locals and tourists that can support fun educational activities.
We produced a masterplan in 2008 which had to be put on hold but we are now discussing a review of this previous plan for implementation before the Dubai Expo 2020, during which many thousands of additional visitors are expected to Dubai.
The site supports a wide variety of migratory species, particularly waders which use the mudflats for feeding, and was designated the UAE’s first Ramsar site in recognition of its importance. Although most species have already moved on to their summer breeding grounds, the team was treated to several hundred flamingos in front of one of the existing bird hides.
We look forward to working with Dubai Municipality on this valuable wildlife site in the heart of one of the world’s most iconic cities.
