New report using WWT Consulting’s aerial survey data has now been published
The Joint Cetacean Protocol Phase III analysis report and guidance for use have now been published. These can be downloaded from the JNCC website (http://jncc.defra.gov.uk/page-7201). The report, which will be used for conservation assessments, marine spatial planning and to support other research studies, includes an important contribution from WWT Consulting’s visual aerial surveys. These surveys around the UK coast between 2001 and 2009 for Department of Energy and Climate Change, the Statutory Nature Conservation Bodies and individual wind farm developers provided over 8,000 cetacean records and the largest single contributing dataset for Harbour Porpoises Phocoena phocoena, with over 7,000 records http://www.wwtconsulting.co.uk/our-services/ecological-surveys-and-assessment/aerial-surveys-for-seabirds-and-cetaceans/
It is a privilege to have been able to contribute to this project as we appreciate the value of data collected and analysed at such a large scale for all manner of conservation and planning applications, and, besides, seeing cetaceans is always a magical experience!
