WWT Consulting design for Kester’s Docking gets planning consent
Earlier this year, and as part of a project commissioned by the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire Wildlife Trust, WWT Consulting completed fieldwork, concept plans and detailed designs for the creation of over 170 hectares of wetlands as part of the Great Fen Project. Planning consent was recently granted for the designs and, hopefully, construction should begin in the autumn.
The Great Fen project is one of the largest restoration projects of its type in Europe. The plan is to create a landscape of 3,700 hectares around existing fenland nature reserves, restoring farmland to habitat that has not been seen in the area following drainage of the land for farming. Our design will see the creation of large areas of reedbed and wet and dry grassland areas that will support a range of wildlife and link into other local sites such as Rymes Reedbed and Holme Fen.
After some wet and windy fieldwork earlier in the year and hours spent designing the habitats, it’s great to hear that our plans will soon be put into practice.
