WWT Consulting presentation at Guangzhou Wetland and Ecology Symposium and provision of advice on Wetland Treatment Systems
Last week WWT Consulting were invited by the Guangzhou government to present at the Guangzhou Wetland and Ecology Symposium.
Bena Smith, one of our Principal Consultants, gave a presentation on the current status of global wetlands and provided suggestions for the city’s wetlands. The audience included wetland staff from around Guangdong Province, and both the mayor and vice-mayor of Guangzhou City. A separate meeting was held with Mr Ren Xuefeng, Deputy Communist Party Secretary of Guangdong province to discuss wetland conservation Province-wide and the Greater Bay project between Guangzhou, Hong Kong and Macao. The event was covered by local media. Here’s an online news article in the local language.
After the symposium, Bena visited agricultural wetlands in Suzhou at the invitation of WWF-China. The area is important for rice production and visits were conducted to various farms to advice on existing methods to reduce non-point source water pollution entering Lake Taihu. This included a number of Wetland Treatment Systems to clean farm run-off as well as novel methods to reduce pesticide use such as rice-eel systems and farm waste reduction by turning rice straw into compost. A meeting was held with staff from Changshu Institute of Technology to discuss potential collaboration opportunities on wetland treatment methods.
