Sri Lankan government approves a cabinet paper which ensures the protection of the majority of wetlands across the city.
We have been working in Colombo, Sri Lanka for many years to promote the importance of and build capacity for improved management of the wetlands for the people and wildlife of the region. The World Bank have employed us for the last 5 years to provide advice, training and design support to their staff and government agencies. The government has finally approved a cabinet paper which ensures the protection of the majority of wetlands across the city.
This is a major achievement because although we have developed a management strategy that integrates urban development with wetland management and conservation it had yet to be ratified by cabinet and there was always a risk that subsequent administrations would not follow the implementation strategy we have developed with government agency partners and the World Bank. We are very pleased to say and relieved that, that risk has now disappeared with the approval of the cabinet paper.
Follow this link to a press article in Sri Lanka that has announced the cabinet paper approval and the setting up of a specific committee for their protection which is what we have been calling for.
