Dolphins A-hoy!

11 October 2010

Cetacean surveys in Scotland have been a great success

We've just received the postcard below from Gareth who has been based in Scotland recently conducting aerial surveys for the University of Aberdeen.

As part of a monitoring programme in the Moray Firth to assess the occurence and distribution of marine mammals, he and the team have recorded four species of dolphin as well as Harbour Porpoise and Minke Whale.

The postcard reads:

"Dear All

University of Aberdeen are really pleased with our surveys of these guys [Bottlenose dolphin on front of postcard] ... and Harbour Porpoise, Common Dolphin, Risso's Dolphin, White-beaked Dolphin and Minke Whale.

House bird list [the number of different bird species recorded by members of the team during the survey period] reached 76 species in the end. Birding in Shetland going well.

Hope everyone is engaged in stimulating projects or well rested from time out.

All the best.

Aye, G."
