Wetland restoration advice in Spain

06 December 2010

Matt Simpson recently visited Úbeda in Andalusia to look at the restoration of wetlands in the Guadalquivir catchment, a region in Spain famous for olive production.

Due to intensive farming practices, there have been problems with soil erosion resulting in soil and fertilisers ending up in the surrounding wetlands and rivers. The local government recognises that change is needed and, during the visit, WWT Consulting provided advice on how to restore the damaged wetlands, improve farming practices and also discussed opportunities for developing wetland tourist facilities to generate income for the region.
