Boat Survey Training

05 August 2010

Five members of the Consultancy’s aerial survey squad donned their waterproofs and ventured out of the office for an intensive four days of training in boat-based survey methods.

Gareth Bradbury, James Darke, Anne Harrison, Bea Lopez and Michael Shackshaft received accreditation in European Seabirds at Sea (ESAS) survey methods after getting to know the two-hour Islay to Kennacraig ferry route inside out.

Highlights of the trip were an Orca (Killer Whale), hundreds of Manx Shearwaters, Guillemot fathers with their chicks, Great-northern Divers, a Minke Whale, and occasional Harbour Porpoises. The surveyors can now be contracted as observers on boat-based bird surveys, e.g. in proposed offshore windfarm or tidal energy areas.
