Team return from project in the Middle East

Emma Alesworth (pictured, third from right) and Phil Shepherd (pictured, far left) have just returned from Sir Bani Yas Island in the Arabian Gulf, off the coast of Abu Dhabi. This was our second visit; the first visit, one year ago, at the invitation of the Tourism Development and Investment Company, was to advise them on bird disturbance issues and identify opportunities for habitat enhancement and potential visitor centre masterplanning.

Plans to develop the island sensitively with wildlife protection foremost, as decreed by the ruling Sheik, as a nature-based tourism and residential destination have been progressed. This latest trip gave us the opportunity to influence concept and detailed designs for a range of tourism infrastructure with a view to minimising disturbance to the birdlife found within the island’s coastal lagoons, and to gather information that will form a wetland management plan for these important areas.
