Staff have been searching for signs of Water Vole
A small team of our ecologists, led by Anne, is currently tramping around watercourses and ponds in the London Borough of Ealing, searching for field signs of Water Vole and assessing the quality and potential of habitats for supporting them and other wetland species.
They will also be giving the countryside rangers some recommendations on how these habitats might be improved or restored to improve the wetland biodiversity.
Given the highly urbanised landscape, isolated waterbodies and heavily eroded riverbanks, they have been delighted today to find vole latrines and feeding evidence at two locations.
The Ealing team have asked us to go back next Spring to continue the Water Vole scoping in other areas, and to look at the feasibility of restoring and creating wetlands in the borough. We’ll also be surveying the aquatic invertebrate communities along the River Brent.
