North Rupununi, Guyana, South America
2003-2008
The North Rupununi is a mosaic of savanna, wetland, and rainforest habitats with high biodiversity. It is also the homeland of the Makushi Amerindian people who depend on natural resources for their livelihoods. This pristine environment is under threat from extensive logging and mining so there is an urgent need to monitor impacts, build capacity and have developed management programmes.
WWT Consulting, in collaboration with WWT, Royal Holloway University of London and the Open University have developed a biodiversity and habitat quality monitoring protocol and carried out a comprehensive programme to build capacity in conservation and natural resource management across Guyana. We have also created an innovative approach for natural resource management which provides important lessons and guidance for future conservation or sustainable development projects.
