National Environmental Research Institute (NERI)
Norway
2011
Since 2009, the Danish National Environmental Research Institute (NERI) have undertaken waterbird surveys off the coast of Norway for the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research (NINA). WWT Consulting were subcontracted to assist with the last two survey flights of the year for 2011. We have extensive aerial survey experience of UK offshore waters and the team's observation and identification skills were employed here on some species typical of the Norwegian coast.
Observations from the first flight included White-tailed Eagle, Black Guillimot, Long-tailed Duck, Greylag, Red-breasted Merganser and a large flock of 400 Eider. Moose and Reindeer were also seen during the transit.
The second flight took in some fjords, and flocks of up to 50 Ptarmigan were seen over the surrounding mountains. Seven Orca were also spotted hunting at the end of one of the transects within the Arctic Circle.
