Horsell Common Habitat Creation

Client

Horsell Common Preservation Society

Location

Surrey, UK

Year

2010 - ongoing

WWT Consulting has undertaken a feasibility study and developed concept and detailed designs for creating wetland habitat at the Horsell Common Preservation Society’s new headquarters, Heather Farm. The 5.6ha site was formerly a mushroom factory on a site on the outskirts of Horsell, near Woking in Surrey, UK.  The majority of the factory buildings, except the office block, will be removed to provide an opportunity for habitat creation. Proposed habitats include wet grassland, dragonfly ponds, wild flower meadows, reedbeds, open water and marshes.

After habitat construction, which includes at least 60% of the site, the area will be open to the public with access to the existing Horsell Common. The site will be divided to provide a dedicated dog walking area, a wildlife walk area with pond dipping platforms and an area for educational activities, and a wildlife zone which people will be able to view through screens to avoid wildlife disturbance.
