Jersey
2010
The National Trust for Jersey contracted WWT Consulting to review the access for visitors and the possibility of providing interpretation at La Mare au Seigneur (St Ouens Pond) on the west coast of Jersey. It is the largest freshwater pond on the island and, as such, represents a significant portion of habitat supporting some interesting wetland species, including Marsh Harriers that hunt over the surrounding reeds.
Following a site visit to assess the potential of the area and the current access constraints, a report was produced providing recommendations to improve access to the site from the main road and neighbouring visitor attractions. Concepts were included for the development of a hide and other visitor facilities, such as an educational pond dipping area, paths and interpretation options.
A second site, Les Maltières (Grouville Marsh), in the east of Jersey, was also briefly assessed for the potential to improve visitor access around it, to engage locals and visitors with the special wetland habitat represented there, in close proximity to a popular beach area and golf course.
